Jan Gorecki

Memorial Scholarship

 

Purpose: To memorialize the life of Jan Gorecki by recognizing outstanding Kearney Catholic High School students active in the school’s Spanish language program with a scholarship to further their education.

 

Overview: The Jan Gorecki Memorial Scholarship was established by the parents of Jan Gorecki in December, 2005.  The fund was established by David and Berniece Gorecki with a $500 contribution and the scholarship fund also includes $70 in other memorial gifts made in honor of Jan Gorecki.  The family wishes to award a $200 scholarship each year for three years with the first scholarship being awarded in May, 2005 to a graduating senior from Kearney Catholic High School.  The scholarship may or may not be continued after a three year period.

 

Scholarship Criteria:

  1. The Jan Gorecki Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a Kearney Catholic High School senior who plans to enroll in  a four year college or university in the fall term immediately following their graduation.
  2. First priority in awarding the scholarship will be given to a student planning to pursue a career in which the Spanish language is a primary requirement for the career.  However, the recipient does not have to pursue a Spanish language related major to be awarded the scholarship.
  3. The recipient must be a student in good standing at KCHS.
  4. The recipient must be enrolled in Spanish language classes at KCHS during their senior year of high school.
  5. Special consideration will be give to students who participate in activities surrounding the Spanish language curriculum at KCHS (i.e. Spanish Club, Spanish class trips, etc.)
  6. Interested students will complete the school’s standard scholarship application to become eligible for the scholarship.  Scholarship applications will be available around March 1 each year.
  7. Selection of the scholarship recipient will also include consideration of the student’s overall grade point average, class rank, college entrance exam scores, moral character, leadership, school involvement and community service.
  8. The scholarship will be presented at the school’s annual Senior Honors Night program with a plaque or certificate being presented to the winner.
  9. Scholarship proceeds will be paid directly to the recipient’s college or university choice to be used for tuition, room and board, books or other college related expenses.
